The latest edition of Media Trust’s Brilliant Scotland series comes from
the centre of Glasgow at the vibrant, bi-lingual social enterprise hub, Coffee
and Craic.
Presenters Farah Bradford and Kyle Smith report on a mammoth
nationwide tour to help support the work of unpaid carers; on how sharks and
frogs are helping under-5s learn to ride a bike; on how school pupils in Fife hope
to change political debate in the wake of last year’s referendum; and meet the
student ambassadors working to reduce sexual violence against women in
Aberdeen.
Dementia Carer Voices
The programme follows Tommy Whitelaw, who gave up a life on tour with
megastars such as Kylie Minogue and U2 to care for his mother who had been
diagnosed with dementia. From student nurses to consultants, patients to
politicians, the phenomenal Dementia Carer Voices campaign has brought about a
dramatic shift in thinking on support for unpaid carers and those they care
for.
Play on Pedals
Everyone says you never forget how to ride a bike, so why not learn to
ride as young as you can? That’s the thought behind the Play On Pedals project,
which aims to give every four year old child in Glasgow the chance to learn to
ride a bike before they start school. Brilliant Scotland meets a group of nursery
school children as they saddle up and take on the sharks and frogs on their
balance bikes for the first time.
#IndyRef young voters
Whatever the outcome of last year’s Scottish Independence Referendum,
one lasting legacy is among young voters. For the first time in UK history 16
and 17 year olds were allowed to vote in the referendum and it now looks almost
certain they will soon get to vote in a general election for the first time
too. Political reporter Ted Simpson speaks to young activists and campaigners
and to new voters at secondary school in Fife about how opening the ballot box
to young teenagers has changed politics forever.
Aberdeen RAS package
Helping prevent sexual violence – and supporting survivors of sexual
violence – is something many of us would prefer not to talk about. But
campaigners and student ambassadors in Aberdeen believe that honest and
informed discussion about issues such as consent and the law on rape will help
keep young people safer and empower survivors.
